We Are Girls In Sport Collaboration with Little Big Sports

One shop for Girls' Sportswear

Little Big Sports and We are Girls in Sport have been supporting each other for many years.  And now they’re collaborating to provide girls and young women with sportswear that is designed for them with the We are Girls in Sport Pop-up Shop on the Little Big Sports website.

Founders Katie, Little Big Sports, and Caroline, We are Girls in Sport, have a common goal of helping children and young adults to start healthy habits and be active.  You can read more about how Little Big Sports started here.  We are Girls in Sport started in 2019 and aims to help girls find a sport they love and, importantly, stick at it.  They believe that there is a way for all girls to enjoy being active whether that’s going for a long walk, swimming or being involved in a team sport, and everything in-between.

Katie has seen girls start a new sport first hand as she established the girls’ section of her local cricket club (now expanding to women too) in 2021.  It’s introduced many girls to cricket and given them a chance to try something new.  Katie’s witnessed the highs of team success, girls making new friends, developing skills and personal bests being achieved, bowling, batting and even including how to score (it’s quite complicated in cricket!).

However, We are Girls in Sport and Little Big Sports know that it’s not all plain sailing for girls in sport and they face barriers throughout their sporting journeys.  Periods, body consciousness and lack of confidence are well known obstacles …

Thankfully, girls sportswear is hitting the headlines too.

Women’s sportswear making the headlines

2021 – the Norwegian beach volleyball team wore shorts instead of bikini bottoms while competing.  They were fined for doing so but lit a spark to under what women wear to play sports.  Important subjects such as athlete comfort and autonomy were debated.

2023 – British hockey player Tess Howard shook up her sport by suggesting that as players train in shorts, why can’t they wear them to compete?  Professional hockey players were expected to wear a skirt or a skort but thanks to Howard, the International Hockey Federation changed the rules allowing skirts, skorts or shorts.  Howard is now behind the campaign called Inclusive Sportswear which has had recent success with the Department of Education changing its policies on PE kit in schools.

In 2023 we also saw the Lionesses change the colour of their shorts to blue from white.  This helped raise the important profile of periods and kit.  White kit is not very forgiving when it comes to periods and alongside the Lionesses, the Red Roses and other teams in both elite and grassroots sport changed the colour of their sportswear for women and girls too.

2025 – We all witnessed the Camogie issue.  Matches were called off, governing bodies got involved simply due to the issue of skorts vs shorts.  In the end common sense prevailed and players were allowed to choose what they wear to compete.

The future of women’s and girls’ sportswear

Thanks to many campaigners, and elite sports clubs and athletes demanding change, girls no longer have to wear oversized kit that was designed for boys and men – or, even worse, to wear ‘hand-me-down’ men’s kit - or to adhere to cultural norms (white shorts might work for boys but they make girls feel uncomfortable).

And luckily, more and more independent brands are emerging to address the gap of sports-specific kit for the female body.  And it’s not just the clothes that girls and women wear to be active; it’s also the essential underwear and protective kit that prevents injury, giving girls the confidence to commit 100% to that kick, lap, tackle or throw.

This is why Little Big Sports and We are Girls in Sport have partnered to create the We are Girls in Sport Pop-Up Shop on the LBS website.  One shop for girls’ sports kit where you can find everything you need to be active, that’s the goal.

Caroline and Katie have been carefully curating the brands to make sure that they’re value aligned with their mission.  Making sure that they’ve done the research and are not just using the old method of ‘pink and shrink’.  Making sure that the brands want girls to succeed in sport, just like they do.

So check out their new shop <here> and provide the girls in your life with sports kit they’ll love.  Sports kit which will help them succeed.  Sports kit that will help them fulfil their potential, feeling comfortable and confident.
